BILINGUAL EMPHASIS

If you are a bilingual education major (fluent in both English and another language), you should definitely consider taking this content emphasis.

NAU requires the following courses in this 18-hour emphasis, all of which apply toward Arizona's 21-hour bilingual endorsement:

      • 3 hours in linguistics: ENG 308 or 322
      • 3 hours in foundation courses: BME 410 or ENG 338
      • 3 hours in culture: BME 480 or, for seniors only, ENG 538
      • 9 hours in methods from BME 420, 430, 440, 450, and 470 and, for seniors only, BME 531, 533, 534, or 535.

If you serve in an Arizona school district as a bilingual classroom teacher, bilingual resource teacher, or other bilingual specialist, you must be a certified teacher and hold a bilingual endorsement. (If you have a bilingual endorsement, you are also authorized to teach English as a second language.) To obtain a bilingual endorsement, the State of Arizona requires that you:

      • Complete our 18-hour bilingual content emphasis
      • Take 3 hours of electives approved by a BME advisor
      • Be certified in elementary, secondary, or special education
      • Be able to pass a language proficiency exam in a language other than English

If you want more information about the bilingual endorsement, contact a BME advisor or the Bilingual Office (Unit) of the Arizona Department of Education, 1535 West Jefferson, Phoenix, AZ 85007 (602-542-3204).
