B.S.ED. IN SPECIAL AND SECONDARY EDUCATION

Admissions and Requirements Information

To earn this degree, you must complete the four components described below. This dual major doesn't require a minor or content emphasis.

General Education Requirements :  6 hours
Special Education Major : 40 hours
Secondary Education Requirements : 59+ hours
Liberial Studies Requirements : 43 hours

TOTAL : 148+hours
  1. General Education
Six hours are required. You must take the following courses: EDF 200 and EPS 325
  2. Special Education Major
You must take both special and elementary education coursework for this major, for a total of 40 hours.

You must take the following 31 hours of special-education courses:

        • ESE 308, 380, 423, 425, 426, and 460
        • 7 hours of ESE 308, 424, and 450 in one emphasis-emotional disturbance, learning disabilities, or mental retardation
        • 8 hours of student teaching: ESE 491

Because Arizona special-education certification is for grades K-12, you must also take the following nine hours in elementary education: ECI 300 and two courses from ECI 304, 306, and 307.

  3. Secondary Education Requirements
You must take at least 59 hours in secondary education and discipline courses:

The 24 hours of secondary-education courses are ECI 308, 322, 350, 450, 465, and 495. Many academic departments require special methods classes prior to your student teaching; you may not take these courses in lieu of ECI 450.

To find out about the 35+ hours required in your discipline field (such as English, Social Science, or biology), refer to the appropriate academic department. NOT ALL DISCIPLINES ARE APPROVED FOR SECONDARY EDUCATION; YOU CAN GET A LIST OF APPROVED DISCIPLINES FROM C.O.E.'s Division of Student Services in Room#101 of Eastburn Education Center (520-523-2209).

  4. Liberial Studies Requirements
See the General Academic Requirements chapter of the Undergraduate Catalog or contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office for more information. You need 43 credit hours of liberial studies in order to obtain this degree. For this dual degree, you must take SC 340 as part of your liberial studies coursework.

Please be aware that although POS 220 is the constitution requirement for Arizona certification, this course does not apply toward liberial studies credit. You may meet the requirement by demonstrating proficiency on an exam given by NAU's Counseling and Testing Center or by taking two courses, POS 110 and 241, which do apply toward liberial studies credit and can be substituted for POS 220.

In addition to the standard admission requirements of a B.S.Ed. degree, if you are majoring in elementary education or in elementary and special education (dual major) then you must meet the following criteria:

  • Declared a major and minor or an extended major
  • Completed at least 3.0 hours in your major
  • Have a grade point average of at least 2.5 in all major coursework
  • Have a grade of at least C (2.0) in MAT 110, 114, 135, or equivalent
