You must take the following 31 hours of special-education courses:
Because Arizona special-education certification is for grades K-12, you must also take the following nine hours in elementary education: ECI 300 and two courses from ECI 304, 306, and 307.
The 24 hours of secondary-education courses are ECI 308, 322, 350, 450, 465, and 495. Many academic departments require special methods classes prior to your student teaching; you may not take these courses in lieu of ECI 450.
To find out about the 35+ hours required in your discipline field (such as English, Social Science, or biology), refer to the appropriate academic department. NOT ALL DISCIPLINES ARE APPROVED FOR SECONDARY EDUCATION; YOU CAN GET A LIST OF APPROVED DISCIPLINES FROM C.O.E.'s Division of Student Services in Room#101 of Eastburn Education Center (520-523-2209).
Please be aware that although POS 220 is the constitution requirement for Arizona certification, this course does not apply toward liberial studies credit. You may meet the requirement by demonstrating proficiency on an exam given by NAU's Counseling and Testing Center or by taking two courses, POS 110 and 241, which do apply toward liberial studies credit and can be substituted for POS 220.
In addition to the standard admission requirements of a B.S.Ed.
