To earn certification to teach in grades 7 through 12, you must have a teaching major and a teaching minor or an extended teaching major in another department. Refer to the academic area in which you plan to major (for example, chemistry or English or Social Sciences) for information about specific requirements for your major and/or minor.
In addition to your major and/or minor, you must take three semesters of professional education courses for secondary certification. These courses include:
You must take POS 220 (or POS 110 and 241) to satisfy the State of Arizona's certification requirements for the federal and Arizona Constitutions. (You may meet this requirement by examination through NAU's Counseling and Testing Center.)
You must have an academic advisor in both your major and minor departments. In addition, C.O.E.'s advisement office offers advisement for your professional education program after you apply to the program. You can also earn endorsements to teaching certificates in our instructional leadership department-in middle schools and library science.
For the middle school endorsement, you must take ECI 323 and arrange a practicum experience at the middle level.
For, the library science endorsement, you must take 18 hours, including LS 301, 302, 400 and 401; ECI 302; and one elective in library science or audiovisual education. You must also pass the relevant section of the AEPA.
There are two minors offered through the instructional leadership department:
Minor in Library Science
To complete this minor, you must take 20 hours of coursework, including the following required courses: LS 301, 302, 400, and 401 and ECI 302.
To earn endorsement as a school librarian in Arizona (K-12), you must have a valid teacher's certificate and at least 18 hours in library science.
Minor in Technology Education
To complete this minor, you must take the following 24 hours: VTE 101, 105, 110, 115, 120, 330, 410 or 491, 465.
