FOREIGN LANGUAGE EMPHASIS (FLEAMS)

Arizona now requires that all public school students learn a language in addition to English.

If you are an elementary education major who wants to teach a language such as Spanish, French, or Navajo to younger pupils, you may want to take this content emphasis in foreign language in elementary and middle schools (FLEAMS) and become one of the first elementary teachers qualified to teach a foreign language in Arizona.

NAU requires the following courses in this 18-hour emphasis:

      • 3 hours of foundations: BME 410 or ENG 338
      • 3 hours of linguistics: ANT 323
      • 3 hours of culture: BME 480
      • 6 hours of foreign language methods: FOR SENIORS ONLY, BME 599
      • 3 hours of methods from BME 420, 430, 450
