RURAL SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

Description:

This program prepares preservice special education teachers to effectively work with Native American children and their families in a remote reservation area. University students receive practical classroom experience and at the same time experience almost total immersion in the Navajo culture. Mornings are spent in public school classrooms with primarily Navajo children and special Education courses from an on-site NAU professor are provided in the late afternoons. After two semesters, students return to campus to complete their elementary coursework or student teaching.

Location: Kayenta, Arizona on the Navajo Indian Reservation

Area of Study: Special Education

Requirements:

  • must be admitted to the C.O.E. ;
  • available to elementary and secondary dual majors;
  • up to 10 students can be admitted to begin in the fall;
  • a competitive admission process is completed in the spring;
  • Note: this program is funded by a DOE grant and provides the following:
    • in-state tuition, books and housing.
