Dr. Barbara Price
Dr. Price attended NAU from 1983 to 1985 in the Education Doctoral Program with the Point Loma cohort through the former Center for Excellence in Education. Her doctoral dissertation became a document utilized by Bill Honig, California State Superintendent, to assist in understanding the value of vocational education for students in comprehensive high schools throughout California.
Dr. Price has served in a variety of educational positions throughout her esteemed career, including: Director of Career and Continuing Education for the Vista Unified School District, Vista, California; Director of Private Post Secondary Programs for the Los Angeles County Office of Education; Director of Career and Continuing Education for the Pomona Unified School District; Director of Education Programs for 23 Academic Centers for Chapman University; part-time teacher at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. In addition, she was the first female to be elected to the position of President of the California Association of Vocational Administrators (CAVA).
Favorite teacher: Dr. Ralph Stout, Comparative Education, “who had been involved in education throughout the world interfacing with dignitaries and education leaders of great importance. He made his personal experiences come alive in the classroom. His passion for education was contagious. Today as I teach my students who will become teachers, I use much of what I learned from him.”
In addition to her favorite teacher, Dr. Price had high praise for her advisor, Dr. Michael Miles. Of Dr. Miles, Dr. Price has this to say, “He always went the ‘extra mile’ for each of his advisees. I felt honored to have had him for my advisor. While writing my dissertation, he would meet with me every morning at 7:00 o’clock to review and critique what I had written the day before. He would give me suggestions for improvement; ask me questions to challenge my thinking and provide encouragement to spur me on to complete a valued document.” She states that upon her return to California and her administrative position, Dr. Miles kept in close contact with her to encourage and insure that she stayed on track. He was instrumental in her completing the program in record time. “Thank you, Dr. Miles.”
Memorable moments: “the camaraderie of my fellow students from Point Loma College, San Diego, California (the joint program to which we all belonged). Living together in a dorm, studying together and supporting one another was very special. One outstanding moment was when the President of NAU hooded me and my four daughters from high up in the stands said in unison, ‘Right on, Mom.’”
Advice for NAU students: “My advice to students at NAU today is to enjoy, be very attentive and never lose sight of your goal—you are in the best education program in the nation. Be all you can be and never stop educating yourself. Be proud to be a Lumberjack!”
