Dr. James C. Sherman, College of Education Alumnus – Class of 1964

Homecoming weekend is around the corner. This year, the NAU Alumni Association is recognizing Blue and Gold class of 1964. College of Education graduate, Dr. James Sherman, and fellow classmates, will attend this exciting event to celebrate their history and collegiate start in life at NAU.

Dr. Sherman received his Bachelor in Secondary Education through the College of Education. While attending classes at NAU, he also served in the Army National Guard. Dr. Sherman’s initial role in the Army was Cook and Mess Sergeant; however, upon graduation, he quickly moved up the ranks to Military Intelligence Officer then Commander of the Military Intelligence Detachment. He eventually commanded a brigade with the 91st Division and ended his career on the 5th Army staff.

Dr. Sherman’s military career did not deter him from reaching his academic goals. Within five years of leaving NAU, he completed a Master’s in Oriental Studies at the University of Arizona and an M.A. in Student Personnel Services from the University of Denver. During this time, he also taught high school in Brawley, California for a year. In 1972, Sherman finished his doctorate in Higher Education Administration with an emphasis in International Relations and East Asian Studies.

In 1971, Dr. Sherman joined the Colorado University at Boulder as a counselor/manager in the Department of Housing. The College of Engineering recognized his enthusiasm and dedication in working with students and transferred him to an Undergraduate Student Counselor. In 1993, he was promoted to Director of Student Services. Currently, Dr. Sherman is the Associate Dean at the College of Engineering.

Dr. Sherman is the recipient of numerous university and college honors, most notably the Dean’s Distinguished Service Award and the Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Award from the CU-Boulder Council on Academic Advising. Although he is retired from the Army Reserves, Dr. Sherman volunteers as Army Reserve Ambassador for the State of Colorado to provide assistance to the soldiers and their families.

Every five years, Dr. Sherman meets up with fellow classmates on the steps of Old Main for Homecoming. They often reminisce about some of their adventures while attending NAU. One of Dr. Sherman’s most mischievous tales involves the raising of rats as pets in his dorm room. It seems that as the rats began to multiply, so did the escapades of Dr. Sherman and his roommate. After a terrorizing affair at a girl’s sorority house, Dr. Rolle, current Dean of University Services, asked that the gentlemen take the rats elsewhere. So goes just one humorous escapade of an NAU alum.

Dr. Sherman lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife, Tamara and their two children, Sara and John. He continues to be an avid supporter of NAU and plans to return to campus for many years to come.

If you know a distinguished alum who would like to share a story about his or her career or experience at Northern Arizona University, please contact Laura Theimer at 928.523.8746 or email Laura.Theimer@nau.edu.
